Why Not Social Media - Workology
Why Not Social Media Why Not Social Media? Unless you live under a rock youâve probably heard enough about social media to make your ears bleed. It was everywhere last week at the SHRM National Conference and as part of the social media team I confess I was out there preaching the gospel. Why Not Social Media? But the thing is for every person I met who was on social media; I probably met another 1 or 2 who didnât find it useful or helpful in their careers or for their companies. Iâm not talking about a stereotypically close minded person. The people I talked to are smart, intelligent, professionals. I understand for some companies social media might not be the best way to recruit, retain or engage. But it puzzled me that some people did not see the value for their own career. When I gently pushed I heard the following: There is a lot of sound and fury signifying nothing â" There is a lot of junk on social media. There are some shady people out there too. Itâs easy to think Twitter and Facebook are just a mindless wasteland of advertising. Whoâs got your best interest at heart? Every time I turnaround it seems like there is another vendor hawking another product that will solve all your HR issues. But how do you figure out which vendors are worth talking to? Too much information For someone with a 40+ hour work week, kids, family, friends or just a life it can be daunting to stare at the milieu that is Twitter or Quora or LinkedIn groups. Where to start? What is useful to my existence? Perhaps it is easier to not even attempt? Lack of privacy/privacy concerns â" PRISM? Enough said. I thought some of these concerns were more valid then others and I rebutted with three things: Social media platforms are the wild, wild, west- you have to look out for yourself. Do some research on privacy settings and remember you donât have to accept every friend request or follow back. Trust your instincts â" If your BS flag or your hackles are up heed the warning. Donât click on suspicious linksâ¦just a link and no other message? Stranger youâve never interacted with before? Sounds like this is a phishing scam or a virus. Create lists from the get-go. Donât be like me. I followed a lot of people and never created a list. Now Iâm following 2000+ people and trying to weed through the sound and fury. What do you think? What gap do social media platforms fill for some and not others? How would you persuade someone to give social a chance?

What Job Descriptions Can Reveal About Employers
What Job Descriptions Can Reveal About Employers What Job Descriptions Can Reveal About Employers At the point when you are exploring a likely manager, there are various wellsprings of data: the organization's site and online life nearness, surveys on Glassdoor, and obviously, classic Googling. In any case, don't disregard the intensity of sets of responsibilities there's a great deal they can disclose to you a ton about an organization. Much the same as your resume is an advertising report, selling you as the item, sets of responsibilities exist to sell applicants on an organization and a job. An expected set of responsibilities' substance and tone can furnish work searchers with various bits of knowledge about the business. Work environment culture For instance, fire up and tech organizations regularly feature their open and cooperative workplaces. As a rule, this implies they have an open office design. Open workplaces have both colossal fans and gigantic spoilers. In the event that you've never worked in an open office condition, make certain to find out about the pattern as an aspect of your responsibilities inquire about. Many new businesses and tech organizations utilize open office designs. They arent for everybody. These organizations need to pull in top ability, so they offer special advantages, and publicize them in their sets of expectations. (Think in-office lager ice chests; on location gourmet experts getting ready natural, privately sourced suppers; or airfare recompenses of thousands of dollars. These are largely real advantages offered by different new businesses and tech organizations in Seattle.) But on the off chance that you like to not obscure the lines among work and play-and between your work life and your home life-such organizations probably won't be your most solid option. Organization culture is a significant thought, on the grounds that succeeding and progressing at work frequently comes down to capacity or results, yet to how well you fit in with the organization culture. Ordinarily, sets of expectations can educate you regarding what that culture is. Lucidity and objectives On the off chance that you go over an expected set of responsibilities that is brimming with language and popular expressions, however light on detail, you've likely discovered an organization that doesn't know very what it's employing for. Another conceivable pointer is a set of working responsibilities that requests incomprehensibly wide-going abilities, or numerous different kinds of yields expected all the time. Estimating achievement in a job that is inexactly characterized can be extreme and it can imply that you pass up chances for progression. Excessively wide or particularly hazy sets of expectations can likewise demonstrate that an organization is attempting to extend its spending plan and recruit one individual to complete the elements of various occupations. Some may see that as a chance, while others may consider it to be a weight. Everything relies upon your objectives and desires. Pace and core interest Quick paced, cutoff time driven workplaces dont consistently allow for seeking after huge picture objectives. Steady cutoff times and consistent weight don't legitimately convert into important work; they regularly mean busywork, and numerous little assignments instead of bigger objectives. On the off chance that you are a major picture individual, an organization that centers around every day cutoff times probably won't give you the time or chance to concentrate on whatever else. In the event that you discover cutoff times elating, you may flourish with that beat and feel capricious in a more slow paced activity. Or on the other hand possibly you want a vocation where you try sincerely while you're there, however don't accept your position home with you. Perusing sets of responsibilities cautiously can give you a feeling of whether a job is centered around various transient objectives or on less long haul ones. Quick paced, direness, and cutoff time driven are only a couple of normal terms that ought to be warnings for work searchers increasingly intrigued by huge picture jobs. Whatever pace you like, ensure your resume shows it. Reverberation the catchphrases from the sets of responsibilities all through your resume any place they fit to help manufacture your application. Realizing what you need in your next activity is significant. In the event that your pursuit of employment strategy is to submit however many applications as could be allowed, you're unfathomably improbable to ever be among the top contender for any activity regardless of whether your capabilities are a match. Just the best 2 percent of occupation candidates are offered interviews, as indicated by Robert Meier, leader of Job Market Experts. To be among the best 2 percent of contender for an occupation, you have to not exclusively be qualified, yet to have modified your application for that particular employment. To measure how well you've focused on your resume for a particular activity, run it through Jobscan's online resume examination device. Hate Your Job 4 Powerful Strategies to Get a Job You Love
Hate Your Job 4 Powerful Strategies to Get a Job You Love You probably put a lot of time and energy into getting that job you hate. Think about it⦠you had to research, you had to interview, and youve probably invested a considerable amount of time and effort there for who knows how long. If youre ready to take the first steps towards a job you actually LOVE to go to each day, then here are four simple yet powerful steps you can take right now: Step #1. Define and Write Down Your Goals Focus on the long term goals first and resist the temptation to worry about how you are going to get there. The âhowâ is what usually stops us in our tracks. Itâs that fear of the unknown: that place you venture out to that creates that uncomfortable feeling. Yes venturing to these places can be uncomfortable, but you will quickly find it also does something else it gets you moving forward, and that too is a powerful motivator AND confidence builder! Step #2. Assess Your Surroundings Notice the people you are working amongst and the product or service you offer. Are you like them or do you feel like a square peg in a round hole? Do you feel like you fit in? What about the product or service you offer â" do you believe in it? Does it resonate with you? This is how you can quickly come to terms with what might not be right about your current situation. Maybe itâs your immediate surroundings or maybe itâs the industry itself thats not a match for you. I know for me, in the positions I had that didnât âfitâ me, not only did I feel like an outsider, I acted like one because something inside me didnât âbuy inâ or âfit inâ with everybody else. Not a good way to get a promotion is it? Step #3: Build Your Job Around Your Life You can begin to take an honest look at your work/life balance by writing down the lifestyle choices that are most important to you and your family. How many points is your current career supporting? Step #4: Envision Your Future Another powerful step you can take is simply to write down what your job might LOOK like if it was truly built around you life. This is the first step to initiating change in a positive direction. Even if that change may be in the distant future, you will be amazed how much you can and will accomplish by taking this initial action. Examples of career choices I have seen professionals successfully make to build their job around their life include planning relocations and strategic salary increases, consulting, telecommuting, portfolio careers and flexible schedules. These are all plans that you can put into motion today! You Are Not a Brand. You HAVE a Personal Brand - Executive Career Brandâ¢
You Are Not a Brand. You HAVE a Personal Brand A few people take it excessively far. They remove the individual from individual marking, and allude to themselves as a brand. They consider themselves â" and heartlessly showcase themselves â" as an item. What's more, they talk and expound on Brand Them relentlessly. Alongside alluding to themselves as an outsider looking in, being a brand by one way or another gives them permit to indecently self-advance their item . . . that is, themselves. They feel that having a brand naturally makes them a specialist at something. This tedious self-advancement shows that they don't generally comprehend what individual marking is about. I think they help give bona fide marking an awful name. The Onion entertainingly satirize this wonder in the news report, I Am A Brand, Pathetic Man Says: Tragic, terrible nearby web designer and blogger Phillip Cathin, 34, told correspondents today that he considers himself to be a brand. I am my own item, the little worm said while gazing at a PC and depressingly rearranging between his Twitter,
